How hydration affects each method
BIA – bioelectrical impedance – is the most sensitive. It sends a small electrical current through your body. Water conducts electricity. Fat doesn’t. More water = lower impedance = lower body fat reading. Less water = higher impedance = higher body fat reading. A 2% change in total body water can swing BIA readings by 3-5%. Consumer BIA scales are even more sensitive because they only measure through your lower body. Dehydration in your legs from a long run? Your reading will be artificially high. The pre‑test protocol for consistent BIA readings This is the protocol I developed from testing over 200 clients. Follow it 24 hours before: No alcohol. Alcohol dehydrates you and changes electrolyte balance, which affects impedance. 12 hours before: No exercise. Exercise increases blood flow to the skin, changes hydration distribution, and temporarily lowers impedance. 4 hours before: No food. A meal draws water into your digestive tract, changing body water distribution.
2 hours before: No fluids. Drink normally up to 2 hours before, then stop. You want stable hydration, not dry. 1 hour before: Void your bladder completely. A full bladder adds water mass and changes impedance. At test time: Same time of day, ideally morning. Your body is most stable after sleep. Don’t test after coffee – caffeine is a diuretic. For women, hydration changes across the menstrual cycle. Estrogen and progesterone affect water retention. In the luteal phase (the week before your period), water retention can increase by 1-2 liters. That’s enough to swing BIA readings by 2-3%.
